These design notes are a reference supplement to the CISC continuing education course on "Seismic Design of Steel-Framed Buildings". They illustrate the design of various types of seismic-force-resisting systems (SFRS) in different Canadian locations with varying seismicity. The notes refer extensively to the National Building Code of Canada 2010 (NBC 2010) and to CSA S16-09 "Design of Steel Structures". In addition, there are many references to the CISC Handbook of Steel Construction, 10th Edition.
The example structures range from 1 to 10 storeys and consist of concentrically and eccentrically braced frames as well as moment-resisting frames. The structural systems include seismic-force-resisting systems in Conventional Construction, Limited-Ductility and Ductile categories.
The 7 seismic force-resisting system designs are as follows:
- Conventional Construction Tension-Only Braced Frame, Single-Storey Building in Toronto
- Limited-Ductility Tension-Only Braced Frame, Single-Storey Building in Montreal
- Conventional Construction Concentrically Braced Frame, 4-Storey Building
- Limited-Ductility (Type LD) Concentrically Braced Frame, Chevron Bracing, 4-Storey Building
- Ductile (Type D) Eccentrically Braced Frame, 10-Storey Building in Burnaby
- Limited-Ductility (Type LD) Moment-Resisting Frame, 4-Storey Building
- Ductile (Type D) Moment-Resisting Frame, 4-Storey Building in Victoria
